A visual of fire cupping therapyEver wondered what fire cupping is and how it came about? People try fire cupping for many reasons – pain relief, treatment of digestive or skin issues, etc. If you’re interested in getting this holistic treatment done, it’s important for you to first learn what it really is.

In this blog post, we discuss what fire cupping is and its short history.

What Is Fire Cupping?
Fire cupping is a form of ancient therapy in which therapists put special cups (made from glass, silicone, earthenware, or bamboo) on the client’s skin. These specialized cups are strategically placed on affected body parts to help increase blood flow to those areas.

This cupping therapy is meant to provide various health benefits and usually lasts somewhere from a couple of minutes to an hour or two, depending on your purpose for getting this form of therapy done.

The practice is commonly referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been around for centuries.

Short History of Fire Cupping
The exact origin of cupping is a matter of great debate as it is still unknown where this therapeutic practice first started. That being said, fire cupping has been referred to in early Chinese and Egyptian medical records.

According to historians, this form of therapy was widely practiced by the Greeks for the treatment of internal diseases. Fire cupping was also a common practice among Muslims, and it is believed that Muslim scientists helped improve and develop this alternative medicine. According to Chinese medical tradition, the use of fire cupping began around 281 CE. At that time, therapists used animal horns to get rid of harmful toxins in the body. However, over time, these were replaced by cups made of glass, bamboo, or bronze.

Today, fire cupping is practiced all over the world, including America and different parts of Europe. It is considered to be one of the common treatments for muscle pain, tuberculosis, skin, and digestive problems.
