Understanding Your Seven Chakras

Chakras

‘Chakra’ comes from the old Sanskrit word that literally means wheel. Ancient cultures believed that the human body had seven energy centers that moved along our spine from our perineum all the way up to the top of our head. These centers of energy were known as the seven chakras.

In a healthy, balanced person, these chakras would work in harmony to provide balance and energy to every part of your body, mind, and spirit. However, if even one of your chakras were out of balance, your health would suffer greatly. You may learn more about your chakras here.

The Seven Chakras

Each chakra represents a different aspect of your body, mind, or spirit. We’ll take you through each one step by step.

The Root Chakra

The very first chakra, also known as Muladhara, is the core chakra meant to connect your energy with Mother Earth. It is meant to keep you grounded, to keep you secure both financially and emotionally.  The chakra is located at the very base of your spine, right below your belly button. The color that is associated with your root chakra is red.

The Sacral Chakra

The second chakra is also known as Svadhishana. Symbolized by the color orange, this chakra harbors energy to help you enjoy your life through pleasures such as food, sex, and creative endeavors. This chakra is located right below the belly button, near the perineum.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra, also known as the Manipura chakra, cements your self-confidence, identity, and personal power. It is symbolized by the color yellow and is located near the breastbone in the center of your chest.
This chakra is perhaps the one people are most aware of without actually knowing what it’s called. It’s responsible for that ‘gut feeling’ that gives people hints as to how situations will pan out. For this reason, it is also sometimes referred to as the ‘warrior chakra’.

The Heart Chakra

The Anahata or heart chakra harbors the energies of compassion, kindness, and most notably, love. This chakra is located right over your heart and is said to be responsible for health and healing. A happy, balanced heart chakra will make one feel fulfilled and love. But self-care and self-love are vital to keeping yourself from feeling empty and out of touch.

The Throat Chakra

Naturally, the throat chakra is located right between your collar bone. It is represented by the color blue and is also called Vishuddha. This chakra gives your voice meaning. It is what allows you to speak clearly with love, kindness, and truth.

The 3rd Eye Chakra

Ajna, or the Third Eye Chakra, represents information that goes beyond the material world. A kind of sixth sense, if we must put it in simple words. It is located between your brows and draws in energy that is based on intuition and extrasensory perception. It is symbolized by the color indigo.

The Crown Chakra

The final chakra is the Sahaswara or Crown Chakra. It is located at the top of your head, just like a crown, and is represented by the color violet. This chakra’s energy is the most difficult to explain. Some believe it is consciousness itself, while others think it is a kind of magnetism. It is said to be responsible for connecting your spirit with the entire universe.
