The second chakra is known by many names, including the sacral chakra, navel chakra, Adhishthan, and Shaddala. However, its most common name is Svadhisthana which means “where the self is established.”
The navel chakra is associated with your creative energies as well as your unconscious desires, particularly sexual desires, and emotions.
Symbol
The sacral chakra is symbolized by a white lotus with six vermilions petals. Inside the lotus is a crescent moon which represents water. The symbol represents the close link between the different phases of the moon and the rise and ebb of the water and emotions.
Additionally, the symbol also refers to the female menstruation cycle that takes 28 days to complete (the same time as the lunar cycle) and links the second chakra to the sexual organs and reproduction.
Location
The navel chakra, as its name indicates, is found in the center of the lower belly about three inches below the navel. From the back, it is located at the lumbar vertebrae. It is also associated with the bladder, uterus, pelvis, kidneys, circulatory system and the lymphatic system.
Because of its close proximity to the reproductive organs, the sacral chakra is the center of pleasure, both sexual and non-sexual. When this chakra is open, you can access strong intuition and imagination.
Color
The sacral chakra is represented by orange color. However, since it is also linked to water, it can take a translucent and pale blue hue.
The color orange is linked with emotions like joy, happiness, creativity, passion, and compassion.
Element
The second chakra is represented by water and hence is marked by flexibility and flow. It is characterized by personal expansion and development of one’s identity through interactions with others and the world. As such, relaxing near open water bodies, like lakes, rivers, and streams, or even taking a shower or drinking water can bring the Svadhisthana into harmony and can soothe emotions.
Represented Food
Orange-colored food can help balance the navel chakra. These include oranges, melons, carrots, mangoes, apricots, and sweet potatoes. Coconut and cinnamon are also beneficial. Omega-3 rich food like salmon, almonds, flaxseeds, walnuts, sesame, and other nuts also help to bring harmony to the sacral chakra by reducing inflammation and improving the heart.
Since the second chakra’s element is water, staying hydrated can help keep the emotions in balance.
Crystals
The crystals and stones that you can use to balance the sacral chakra include tiger’s eyes, orange calcite, coral, goldstone, amber, orange fire agate, and clear quartz.
Behavioral Characteristics of the Sacral Chakra
