How Reiki Uses the 7 Chakras as Part of HealingIf you work with a Reiki practitioner, he or she may mention your chakras are out of balance. Many practitioners use the seven chakras as part of their healing methods, even though they come from different spiritual and cultural traditions. Let’s take a look at why the two co-mingle to ease your healing process.

Reiki, as we’ve explained, is a method of Japanese healing using the body’s energy. Historically, the Reiki practice focused on the main energy center, called a tanden, located below the belly button. This one is the Seika Tanden also known as the Earth Energy. But there are three tandens, with the other two located in the upper chest and center of the forehead. They are the Heavenly Energy and the Heart Energy. Together, these three tandens are the three diamonds.

The Seven Chakras
Chakras come from Hindu tradition and play a role in Buddhism. According to those practices, there are seven primary chakras, which are the main focal points for the energy lines that run through the body. They are:

  1. Root chakra — Located at the base of the spine
  2. Sacral chakra — Located just below the navel
  3. Solar Plexus chakra —Located in the stomach area
  4. Heart chakra — Located in the center of the chest
  5. Throat chakra — Located at the base of the throat
  6. Third Eye chakra — Located in the forehead, just above the area between the eyes
  7. Crown chakra — Located at the top of the head

Energy Points in Healing
In both Reiki and Hindu practices, these points regulate how energy flows through your body, and blockages in these areas cause illness and feelings of unwellness. Chakras have become more westernized in the last few decades, and “chakra” is a term with which more people are familiar than hara or tanden.

While the words are slightly different, the concept is similar. A qualified Reiki practitioner will talk to you about your ailments and stressors and help you unblock your energy points — whether he or she speaks of chakras or tandens.
