Reiki healing sounds a bit odd when you find out about it for the first time. After all, your healer isn’t giving you medicine or specific therapy. He or she isn’t touching you; you’re not getting a massage, and it’s not meditation. How can someone use his or her energy to make you feel better?
With that in mind, here are some frequent questions and answers about the practice for those who are skeptical.
Q: How does Reiki work?
A: Reiki uses the healing power of energy to unblock chakras. Blocked chakras can cause many types of medical and mental health issues. Read more about the practice in our other posts.
Q: Why should you try Reiki?
A: There is not one catch-all solution when it comes to our health and self-care. What works for you might not work for others, even for the same ailments and conditions. Some people find great relief in meditation and yoga practices. Others find euphoria or release during exercise. If you’re suffering from chronic pain, stress, creative blockages, or other problems, Reiki is one more option to consider.
Q: Will Reiki work for me?
A: Yes, but it helps to have an open mind. If you go into Reiki without intending for it to work, you will probably be disappointed. Our thoughts are very powerful, and they are part of the process. While there are no high-quality scientific studies (yet) to prove Reiki works, many people report results after just a session or two. And if something makes you feel better, that’s good enough for us! Here is one skeptic’s report on her experience.
Q: Why I, Myra Herron Ray started practicing Reiki and why I believe in it?
A: I always felt like there energy around me. I always felt there was something that was in my body. At the same time, something was missing in me. I felt that I had a sense of purpose that I wasn’t touching on, I was unsettled. I would be around people, and their energy would just drain me. I would come home exhausted. I had to learn how to work the energy. I know that sounds manipulative but it wasn’t.
Then I met my Reiki master, and it all fell into place. I knew that this is something I had to pursue. From that, I realized I learned how to work the energy so I wouldn’t come home drained and also, it gave me a purpose, a way of helping others. Once I started learning and sharing, I realized that this is what I meant to do.
Q: Some experiences I have had or my friends reported since I began Reiki?
A: When my son had his motorcycle accident, I could go into his hospital room and calm him. I walked into a church, I sat down, I just had to open my hands because of all of the energy that was in there, it filled me up and was fabulous. When I held my grandchild for the first time, I felt the energy with her. I do distance Reiki with my grandmother who has Alzheimer’s disease. I have helped headaches go away, helped with joint pain, helped with peacefulness, calmness. In my networking group, I did a Reiki presentation and we all held each other’s hands. More than half of the women were crying by the time we stopped because it was so powerful. It’s a powerful thing in a way that enhances other people’s spirits.
Q: Why I feel it’s essential for people to know about Reiki?
A: First, while it certainly can be religious to some people, it’s not religious-based. It’s not denouncing religion. Some people think it’s evil because you’re dealing with spirits. But if you believe in an evil spirit, in turn, you have to believe in a good spirit. Reiki goes back to using energy. In Reiki, you don’t have to be religious but there is a spiritual part, even if it’s the spirit within you. My spirit leads me to help others.
Second, I struggle sometimes, worrying that people think I’m like an old-school “you are healed” charlatan. But Jesus laid hands and healed. I was always able to lay my hands on people and help them. I would pull negative energy from people. With Reiki, I was able to formalize it and to give it a name. It’s all about helping people, and I think that everybody has gifts, a variety of gifts and that we ought to use our gifts to help people when you can.
