Empath Series: What is an HSP – Highly Sensitive Person?

As a Highly Sensitive Person, you are likely to experience everything more deeply than othersA HSP or a Highly Sensitive Person is often a misunderstood concept. If you are a Highly Sensitive Person, this doesn’t in any way mean that you are weak or a drama queen. We are raised in modern, fast-paced societies, where displaying any sort of emotion is considered a weakness or a ‘call for attention.’ But don’t let this bring you down.
Here are a few common myths regarding Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP) that couldn’t be more wrong.

Displaying Emotion Is Weakness
Because modern society is too afraid to really feel anything, any person who isn’t afraid to let their guard down is considered weak.

This couldn’t be more wrong, however.

If you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), it only makes sense that you will feel everything more deeply. You are likely to be more empathetic, more insightful, and also likely to notice the little things that other people do not.
For example, you are likely to notice subtle changes in someone’s tone or mood while they talk to you.
This doesn’t make you weak, though. If anything, you have a superpower that the common person does not have. That’s often why HSP people are made fun of by people who can’t feel as deeply – they wish they could too.

A Highly Sensitive Person Is an Attention Seeker
Another common way to bully someone who feels deeply is to call them a drama queen or an attention seeker. If you are an HSP, you will at least have heard someone call you either of these things on one occasion or the other. People can be really unkind towards HSP’s because they don’t understand them.

Human beings very rarely tend to be empathetic, especially those who aren’t used to feeling a lot. Some people are naturally insensitive and choose to judge others’ reactions based on their own reactions to things.

For example, someone who isn’t all that sensitive might not have an extreme reaction to something that someone who is sensitive might. As such, when the sensitive person reacts at all, he/she is labeled a drama queen or attention seeker by those who don’t understand the depth of their feelings.

These were just some of the common myths regarding Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP). If you are an HSP, you may have faced a lot of criticism in your life for being weak or calling for attention. But you just have to hang in there and remind yourself that others will not understand you.

You are empathetic, sensitive, and you feel things deeply in a callous world. There is nothing wrong with that. If you still feel like your energy levels and emotions are too much for you, and you easily get overwhelmed, you may want to try an all-natural treatment method such as Reiki.

Reiki is a form of alternative healing that can help you with emotional cleansing by keeping a good, holistic balance between your body, mind, and soul which can help relax you completely.
