A Beginner’s Guide to the Heart Chakra

Chakras

The heart chakra or Anahata is represented with a 12-peak circle around a six-pointed star.According to the Hindu, Vedic, Yogic, Shakta, and Buddhist Tantric traditions, the Anahata is the fourth primary chakras out of the 7. This chakra is commonly called the Heart Chakra. The Sanskrit word Anahata refers to an unstruck sound or the sound of the celestial realm. Along with compassion, love, and affection, the Heart chakra is associated with calmness and serenity.

Location
The Anahata chakra is located over the heart, hence the name. Energy flows through the central channel that goes over the spine, near the heart that is its Kshetram.

This is the chakra right in the middle of the other six chakras. It is here where the spiritual and physical combine. This is the core of our emotional and energy healing.

Symbol
The heart chakra is symbolized by a 12-petaled lotus flower. Inside the circle, two opposite-facing triangles intersect to create a 6-pointed star. In Hindu Yantra, this symbol is called the shatkona and represents the union of male and female.

In a deeper context, the shatkona signifies the union of the Supreme Being or Purusha with Mother Nature or Prakriti.

Color
The heart chakra is associated with the color green. Green is often used to represent calmness, balance, harmony, and serenity.

Element
Keeping with the theme of tranquility, the Anahata is associated with the element of air, touch, and the action of hands.

A Balanced Heart Chakra
The Vedic traditions among others see the heart chakra as a bridge between the emotional, and physical. It’s connected to your ability to feel empathy, your emotional openness, and how peaceful you are.

When the chakra is fully open and in complete balance with other chakras, you will be more compassionate, calm, and loving. You are able to love others and yourself to the fullest. Even when the going gets tough, you can see the positive in other people and deal with the incident in a calm and collected manner.

An Overactive Anahata
An overactive heart chakra is a sign of boundaryless love. You start breaking boundaries and making unhealthy choices, thinking you’re doing it in the name of love.

Regardless of how it impacts your own mental and physical health, you start prioritizing other people’s needs. This can cause heartbreak, pain, and unhealthy relationships.

Physically, it manifests as a fast heart rate, palpitations, and heartburn.

Underactive Anahata
On the other side, an underactive or blocked heart chakra leads to a lack of empathy and compassion. It might also hinder your capability of loving yourself and others. You struggle to connect or relate with other people.

You may also feel impatient, disgruntled, and restless. Some experts think that a blocked heart chakra can lead to issues, such as high blood pressure and other heart-related disturbances.

Opening up a Blocked Heart Chakra
The right way to bring back balance to your heart chakra is by giving yourself some love and care. Start with practicing some breathing exercises to calm your nerves.

  • Meditation and yoga can help re-center your chakra and redirect the flow of energy.
  • Take a hot water bath to relax and release some of the tension you might be holding on to.
  • Treat yourself to a massage.
  • Wear green clothing or greenstone jewelry. You can use jade, green calcite, green aventurine or rose quartz, which is usually pink but is useful for the heart chakra.
  • Add more green foods to your diet. Eat warm and hearty soups to make you feel better from the inside.
  • Repeat affirmations that choose love and compassion.
