A Beginner’s Guide to the Crown Chakra

Chakras

The throat chakra is represented with a lotus flower with 1,000 petals arranged in 20 layers with the word Om written in the center. As the Hindu traditions and tantric yoga traditions explain, the body is made up of seven primary chakras. We have been discussing each one in brief detail and now, we are left with the seventh primary chakra called the Sahasrara.

The name comes from Sanskrit and means “thousand-petaled”. As you would learn, this name is apt as the chakra is represented with a lotus flower with one thousand petals. Commonly the seventh chakra is known as the crown chakra.

Location
Sahasrara is called the crown chakra for its location as it sits atop our heads. The center is at the top, emitting or radiating energy down between your eyes and extends upwards indefinitely.

In the human body, the chakra is associated with the crown of the head or the skull. There are some tantric beliefs that associate the Sahasrara with the pineal gland, hypothalamus, and the pineal gland. It is also thought to be connected with the pituitary gland as it is related to pure consciousness.

Symbol
In appearance, this chakra is certainly one of the most elaborate ones. The symbol consists of a lotus flower with a thousand petals. The petals are described to be different colors and arranged in 20 layers of 50 petals each.

The internal structure of the chakra is supposed to have a circular moon with a triangle in the center, which can point either downward or upward.

Color
The crown chakra is mainly associated with the color purple. To be more precise, shades of violet are more popularly associated with Sahasrara. Some experts also consider white to be linked to the chakra.

Balanced Sahasrara
Even though this chakra is the most dramatic in terms of symbolism, it is surprisingly the most subtle one. Its function is related to pure consciousness. The other six primary chakras emanate from this one.

It can be the source of an individual being able to raise their kundalini or energy of consciousness so they can achieve the state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (free of doubt, chance or differences).

When balance is sustained in the Crown Chakra, the human becomes the ultimate spiritual warrior. It is definitely not easy to do as there are layers of other chakras that need to be realigned first.

Consider this similar to the “self-actualization” phase in Maslow’s hierarchy or the state of reaching “nirvana” in the Buddhist concept.

With a balanced seventh chakra, you’ve basically overcome your fears and hardships that prevented you from feeling ultimate joy, freedom, and contentment from life. You’ll experience spiritual awareness and pleasure living life with whatever it brings.

Emotional Issues and Behaviors of a Blocked Crown Chakra
If the seventh chakra is blocked, it can lead to afflictions that cause restlessness and melancholy. You will be more passive in materializing life goals. Inadequacy in your life will lead you to lose inspiration, oversleep, and slip into depressive episodes

When Is Your Crown Chakra Overactive?
Similarly, an overactive Sahasrara also convolutes your approach to life and make you disillusioned with life and all that it has to offer you. Confusion, disconnection from spirituality, and apathy will become more prominent. You will be more likely to slip into self-destructive behavior patterns.

Physically, both insufficient and excessive activity in the seventh chakra manifests as chronic headaches, migraines, exhaustion, and lack of coordination.

Restoring Balance to the Crown Chakra
Crown Chakra meditation and yoga practice is effective in restoring some balance to the crown chakra. While you meditate, focus on connecting with your spirit. You can further enhance the effect by using Sahasrara stones, such as clear quartz, sugilite or selenite.

Along with that, you also have to focus on the other six chakras. If those are balanced, you will be in a better place to balance the crown chakra. Think of it as a  step by step process. Start from the root chakra and then make your way to the top.

Also, don’t forget to confirm affirmations that focus on your own divinity, spirituality, and sense of self.
